Biography

Ayana Omilade Flewellen is a Black feminist, archaeologist, artist scholar, and storyteller whose academic endeavors are rooted in critical theory informed by Black feminist epistemology. Their work advocates for greater diversity within the field of archaeology and a broader scope in academia. Since July 2022, Flewellen has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University, where they focus on education and research in Black Feminist Theory, historical archaeology, memory, maritime heritage conservation, and community-engaged archaeology. They are a co-founder and currently the Board Chair of the Society of Black Archaeologists and sit on the Board of Diving Purpose. Flewellen's scholarship has gained recognition, being featured in prominent platforms like National Geographic, Science Magazine, PBS, and CNN, and they regularly present their work at various institutions, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
