Biography

Dr. Ayesha Mian Akram is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary, specializing in the intersection of political sociology, transnational feminism, and critical Muslim studies. She completed her PhD in Sociology with a focus on Social Justice from the University of Windsor in 2023. Her SSHRC-funded dissertation examined the community-building politics of Muslim women, emphasizing themes of resistance and wellness. Dr. Akram has co-investigated a project in partnership with the National Council of Canadian Muslims, exploring digital storytelling labs for Muslim youth. As an active member of the Canadian Sociological Association, she co-founded the Anti-Islamophobia Subcommittee and serves on the editorial board of the journal Atlantis: Critical Studies in Gender, Culture, and Social Justice. Her research includes work on South Asian feminisms and the experiences of Canadian-born Muslim women, and she has published articles on critical pedagogies and the challenges faced by immigrant workers. Dr. Akram teaches various courses, including Qualitative Research Methods and Critical Feminist Theory, utilizing experiential learning approaches to engage students critically.
