Aylan Couchie is a Nishnaabekwe interdisciplinary artist, curator, and writer hailing from the Nipissing Nation. An alumna of NSCAD University, she received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design from OCAD University, where her thesis focused on reconciliation and the relationship between monument and public art. Couchie is currently a PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University, focusing her research on land, language, Indigenous placemaking, mapping, naming, digital public art, and gaming. Her research-based practice explores the intersections of colonial and First Nations histories, place, culture, and the issues of Indigenous erasure and cultural appropriation. Couchie has received various accolades, including the Outstanding Student Achievement Contemporary Sculpture award from the International Sculpture Centre and being selected as Queen’s University nominee for the 2023 SSHRC Talent Award.
