Biography

Ayse P. Gurses is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She holds a joint appointment at the Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management. Her areas of expertise include human factors engineering, patient safety, and healthcare technology design. Her current research focuses on improving patient safety in the cardiac operating room, transitions of care, and care coordination, as well as compliance of providers with evidence-based guidelines and nursing working conditions. Dr. Gurses earned her Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Maryland-Baltimore. Before joining Johns Hopkins, she served on the faculty of the University of Minnesota and the University of Maryland-Baltimore. Dr. Gurses is a member of the Human Factors Ergonomics Society and serves as an associate editor for IIE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering. Her research has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Liberty Mutual Paper Award and the Early Career Investigator Award from the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) Foundation. Dr. Gurses has been extensively published in reputable journals and is the principal investigator of the Pediatric Intelligent Care Assistants Supporting Safety & Outcomes (PICASSO) Project.
