Biography

Azadeh Aghighi completed her Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures with a specialization in Islamic Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington in Spring 2023. She currently serves as a lecturer and director of the Persian Language program in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. During the 2024-2025 academic year, she is teaching courses covering elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels of Persian as well as courses such as 'Introduction to Islam' and 'The Qur'an' in the Department of Religion. Her areas of expertise include Islamic Studies, Persian studies, and Arabic languages. Her research interests focus on Islamic Feminism, Gender Studies, Islamic Law, Hadith Studies, and Qurʾānic Hermeneutics. Aghighi has received numerous prestigious awards, including fifty national recognitions for her outstanding performances in Qurʾān recitation competitions in Iran, and has been honored with the 'Distinguished M.A. Dissertation Award' and the 'Indiana University Ph.D. Dissertation Completion Award' in 2021-2022. She has offered courses on fundamental historical aspects of Islam and taught both graduate and undergraduate levels in Arabic and Persian languages.
