Biography

Azadeh Akbari is a Professor of Critical Data and Surveillance Studies at the Center for Critical Computational Studies at Goethe University. She is also a Visiting Scholar with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Global Fellowship from 2023 to 2025. Her research focuses on the geopolitics of digital transformation, digital authoritarianism, data justice, and the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Akbari is the founder and director of the Surveillance in the Majority World Research Network and serves as an associate editor for the journals Surveillance & Society and Information Technology & Development. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor of Digital Transformation at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Akbari has engaged with international media and consulted with policymakers and civil society on issues related to surveillance and digital repression.
