Biography

B. T. Soifer is the Harold Brown Professor of Physics, Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Caltech in 1968 and earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1972. Soifer has held several notable positions including Senior Research Fellow at Caltech from 1978 to 1981, Senior Research Associate from 1981 to 1989, and Professor from 1989 to 2015. He further served as Brown Professor from 2015 to 2017 and has been involved in leadership roles such as Director of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) Science Center and Spitzer Science Center. His research interests are in Galaxy Evolution and Infrared Instrumentation, focusing on the evolution of galaxies that are heavily obscured by dust. He has utilized the Spitzer Space Telescope and other facilities to study Dust Obscured Galaxies (DOGs) and their role in the energy output of the universe. Soifer is actively engaged in the development of infrared instrumentation for astronomical observations, particularly with the Keck telescopes.
