Dr. Babak Abedin

Biography

Babak Abedin is a Professor of Business Analytics and Head of the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics at Macquarie University. He is an executive member of the Macquarie Business School, which offers specialized courses in Business Analytics and Actuarial Studies. He holds a PhD in Information Systems from UNSW Business School and possesses a multi-disciplinary background encompassing business, statistical modeling, and computer science. Throughout his academic career, Abedin has been involved in management consulting and his research is motivated by practical challenges, which are grounded in behavioral managerial theories. He investigates the positive and negative impacts of business analytics and Artificial Intelligence at both organizational and individual levels, focusing on responsible AI, digital innovation, and the transformative effects of data analytics conducted ethically. Abedin has secured substantial external funding for various projects through collaborations with institutions and organizations, contributing significantly to research in Australia. As a program leader at the Macquarie University's Centre for Applied AI, he adopts a teaching approach that is informed by real-world industry and societal issues. He has received numerous recognitions, including the UTS Learning & Teaching Citation and the Faculty of Business teaching award from Macquarie University. With over 90 publications in prestigious journals, his scholarly contributions significantly advance the field of Business Analytics and Information Systems.
