Babak Salimi is an Assistant Professor at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego. Prior to joining UC San Diego, he was a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, where he collaborated with Professor Dan Suciu's database group. He received his Ph.D. from the School of Computer Science at Carleton University under the supervision of Professor Leopoldo Bertossi. His research interests aim to unify theoretical data management techniques with causal inference and machine learning, with the objective of developing a new generation of decision-support systems that assist individuals from diverse backgrounds in interpreting data. His ongoing research in causal relational learning focuses on creating the necessary conceptual foundations for making causal inferences in complex relational data. Additionally, his work in responsible data science seeks to establish the foundations required for ensuring fairness and accountability in an era dominated by data-driven decisions. His research contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the Research Highlight Award from ACM SIGMOD, a Demonstration Paper Award from VLDB, and a Paper Award from ACM SIGMOD.
