Biography

Baoxia Mi is the Wood-Calvert Chair Engineering Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on studying physicochemical processes with an emphasis on advanced membrane processes and nanotechnology to address critical issues related to sustainable water supply, including desalination, drinking water purification, and wastewater reuse. He directs the Membrane Innovation Laboratory (MIL), where he explores innovative materials and methods to create high-performance membranes with enhanced energy efficiency. Mi's work has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Hellman Fellows Award in 2017 and the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award in 2014. Among his research efforts, he is currently investigating the use of graphene oxide nanomaterials to develop next-generation water filtration membranes. He aims to tackle challenges such as membrane fouling, which hinders efficiency in membrane processes, and to promote environmental sustainability through integrated membrane systems for water, energy, and environmental management. His research has been supported by major funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.
