Baran (Abu) Fakhri is a PhD candidate and Term Lecturer at Simon Fraser University in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. His ongoing doctoral research investigates the clandestine migration journeys of Afghan migrants through Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and Western Europe. This research, often referred to by the migrants as 'the Game,' employs ethnographic methods to explore experiences related to borders, 'illegality,' and labor dynamics during these migration journeys. Fakhri's work focuses on the intersections of irregular migration, labor, refuge and asylum issues, border violence, as well as the memory and subjectivity of refugees and forced migrants, particularly within the context of temporalities of waiting and uncertainty. His teaching engagements involve multiple sociology courses for the upcoming semesters at SFU, covering topics from introductory sociology to special topics in social movements.
