Biography

Barbara Carnevali is a Full Professor of Philosophy at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. She studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy, and completed her training as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Chicago. Carnevali also held a postdoctoral position at Sorbonne University and has been a fellow at the Institut des Etudes Avancées in Paris as well as the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University. She serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Philosophy and is a scientific curator for the Italian Philosophy Festival. Her work predominantly explores 'Social Aesthetics', focusing on the relationship between social forms and aesthetic forms, and how these aspects mediate various phenomena such as arts, self-presentation, recognition, prestige, and rituals. Key publications include 'Romanticism and Recognition: Rousseau and the Modern Self' and 'Social Appearances: Philosophy of Display and Prestige'. Currently, she is finalizing a book on the interrelation between architecture, design, and politics in the context of Milan’s post-war modernization.
