Biography

Barbara Castillo Büttinghausen is a Teaching Fellow in Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on Spanish and Portuguese Latin American Studies. She began her tenure in 2021. Barbara teaches language and content-related courses and is involved in undergraduate teaching, particularly Spanish 1B, where she covers oral, written, literature, and culture aspects. Her PhD thesis, completed in 2017 at the University of Bristol, centered around the development of the Chilean Urban Chronicle in the post-dictatorship context, exploring how these non-fictional narratives respond to the societal changes in Chile since the 1990s. Currently, she is publishing her thesis book with Liverpool University Press. Her research interests include contemporary Southern Cone literature and culture, focusing on travel chronicles by Latin American female writers that discuss social gender equality and explore intersections of culture and identity. Barbara has previously worked at the University of St Andrews and the University of Birmingham, and has facilitated various academic conferences, including on themes of oral narratives in Latin America and the socio-political resistance within contemporary Chilean chronicles.
