Biography

Barbara J. Fields is the William R. Shephard Professor of History at Columbia University, specializing in southern history and 19th-century social history. She obtained her B.A. from Harvard University in 1968 and her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1978. Fields is noted for her works including 'Slavery and Freedom: An American History' and her co-authorship of 'Racecraft: The Soul of Inequality in American Life.' Her research contributions have significantly influenced the understanding of slavery and its socio-political implications during the Civil War era.
