Dr. Barbara Hogenboom

Biography

Barbara Hogenboom is a Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Humanities. She serves as the director of CEDLA, coordinating research focusing on politics, governance, development, and the environment from an interdisciplinary perspective. Her research primarily addresses the interactions between public and private sectors as well as social movements within the context of international political economy, particularly as they relate to natural resource usage in Latin America. Hogenboom has been involved in managing significant international research projects, including one that aims at sustainable development while addressing the issues of fossil fuel dependency and equitable resource management in various global contexts. Her notable past project involved a collaborative effort among ten European and Latin American universities, focused on environmental governance and sustainable resource use in the region. Hogenboom’s work critically examines the impact of foreign interests, particularly from China, on oil and mining sectors, while also considering local resistance to large-scale extraction initiatives.
