Biography

Barbara Imperiali is a Class of 1922 Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research group is focused on various aspects of protein structure, function, and design. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach that includes synthesis, advanced spectroscopy, molecular modeling, enzymology, and molecular biology, her team addresses fundamental issues at the interface of chemistry and biology. A significant area of her research investigates protein glycosylation, specifically asparagine-linked (N-linked) glycosylation, which is an essential modification in cellular processes. Her current studies aim to provide inhibitors and tools to explore the roles of glycosylation in pathogenic bacteria and the coordinated action of glycosylation pathway enzymes. Additionally, she is developing novel fluorescent and luminescent probes which are critical for studying complex biological systems, including the dynamics of protein kinase activities and their phosphorylation-dependent interactions. Imperiali's innovative chemical probes are instrumental in advancing our understanding of cellular signaling and the spatial-temporal dynamics of protein functions.
