Barbara Kazmierczak received her PhD from Rockefeller University in 1993 and her MD from Cornell University Medical College in 1994, both in New York City. After completing her Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco, she joined the Yale faculty in 2001. Currently, she serves as a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis and as the Director of the MD-PhD program at Yale. Her research program broadly focuses on bacterial host factors that allow opportunistic infections to occur, specifically using Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a clinically relevant model to address fundamental questions related to bacterial mechanisms involved in infections. Her work includes identifying host responses directed at virulence-associated structures, particularly those mediated by the NLRC4 inflammasome. Dr. Kazmierczak's research also explores the microbiome-host interactions in infants with Cystic Fibrosis and employs longitudinal data to understand gut microbiome composition and its inflammatory responses. She has received several recognitions, including being a Burroughs-Wellcome Fund Investigator in Infectious Diseases and an elected fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
