Biography

Barbara Lorenzkowski is a cultural historian specializing in North America, with research interests that span the Canadian-American border. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa in 2002 and initially served as a tenure-track professor of American history at Nipissing University before joining the Department of History at Concordia University in 2008. Her scholarly work includes the book "Sounds Ethnicity: Listening German North America, 1850-1914," which examines public conversations about ethnicity, modernity, and community. Currently, she is leading an FQRSC-funded research project titled "The Children’s War," which involves a large-scale oral history study focused on the life stories of individuals who grew up in port cities like St. John's and Halifax during World War II. This trans-disciplinary project merges oral history with cultural studies and gender history.
