Biography

Barbara McGowan is a Consultant Endocrinologist and Honorary Reader in Diabetes Endocrinology at Guy's St Thomas' Hospital, and a Professor at King's College London. She was awarded her PhD from Imperial College London in 2007, focusing on the role of relaxin-3 in energy homeostasis and the hypothalamic-pituitary-axis, as well as gut hormones and neuropeptides in appetite control. She leads the obesity and bariatric service at Guy's St Thomas' Hospital, managing patients with complex obesity. Her research interests include gut hormones, appetite control, and pharmacotherapy for obesity remission, particularly in relation to type 2 diabetes post-bariatric surgery. Professor McGowan is the R&D lead for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy's and St Thomas' and is an active investigator in obesity clinical trials. She has been recognized for her outstanding research with the NIHR/RCP/CRN prize in 2016. Furthermore, she serves as a Trustee for the Association for the Study of Obesity, is a member of the SCOPE National fellow obesity management sub-committee, and acts as Treasurer for the UK Society of Endocrinology. Professor McGowan's work addresses crucial aspects of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and immunometabolism, contributing significantly to the field through clinical studies and cross-faculty research initiatives.
