Biography

Barbara Mitchell is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Simon Fraser University, with a specialization in Gerontology. She earned her Honours BA and MA in Sociology from the University of Waterloo and completed her PhD in Sociology at McMaster University in 1995. Mitchell's academic career commenced at the University of British Columbia in 1991, before she took on a sessional instructor role at Simon Fraser University starting in 1994. Over the course of her extensive teaching career, she has instructed both undergraduate and graduate students in various courses, including Introduction to Sociology, Family Dynamics, and both Quantitative and Qualitative Methods. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mitchell has participated on several editorial and advisory committees; notably, she served as the Social Sciences Editor for the Canadian Journal of Aging from 2011 to 2015 and was a consulting editor for the Canadian Review of Sociology during the same period. Her research has been published widely in academic journals and books, enhancing the discourse in areas related to families and aging, life-course research, intergenerational relations, and health promotion.
