Dr. Barbara Müller

Biography

Barbara Müller is a Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at the University of Hamburg, specializing in the history of Christianity from antiquity through the medieval period. She has a diverse academic background, holding degrees in Protestant theology and psychology from the University of Bern. Throughout her career, she has held various academic positions, including Assistant for Church History at the University of Zurich and Visiting Scholar at the University of Virginia. Müller received her doctorate in 2002 and has been recognized for her interdisciplinary work that merges theology with psychology and medicine. Her research interests include monasticism, asceticism, spirituality, and the reception history of church history, particularly focusing on figures such as Gregory the Great and the Egyptian Desert Fathers. She has been an active researcher, contributing to various scholarly discussions and publications pertaining to early monasticism and hagiography. Additionally, she has taught visiting courses at various institutions, including the Benedictine University of Einsiedeln and the University of Cambridge.
