Biography

Barbara Nicholl joined General Practice Primary Care in July 2012 as a Lecturer, where her role is split between research coordination and teaching responsibilities. Barbara’s particular interests include the management of persistent pain in primary care and the impact of persistent pain on individuals with long-term conditions, focusing on multimorbidity and treatment burden, as well as the relationship between physical and mental health. She supervises several PhD students in the field of primary care research and leads the online distance learning MSc in Primary Health Care. Prior to her current position, Barbara worked at Keele University on an NIHR funded cluster randomised controlled trial investigating osteoarthritis comorbid with anxiety and depressive symptoms. She completed her PhD in 2009 at the University of Manchester, exploring the role of psychosocial, genetic, and physical trauma factors in the onset of chronic widespread pain. Her research interests encompass epidemiology, management of persistent pain, and relation to additional physical and mental health long-term conditions, focusing on primary care based research through observational studies and randomised controlled trials.
