Barbara Stokes obtained her bachelor's degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she studied Comparative Literature. After spending years at the University of Massachusetts in Boston in a post-baccalaureate program, she began her PhD in the department of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Her PhD research focused on the mechanisms of antimalarial drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum parasites under the supervision of Professor David Fidock. Her work concentrated on understanding the mechanisms of resistance to first-line antimalarial therapy, particularly artemisinin, and on inhibitors of the Plasmodium proteasome, a novel class of antimalarial compounds currently in development. After completing her PhD, she moved to Glasgow in early 2021 to begin a postdoctoral position in the Marti Lab. Her research at the Marti Lab is primarily focused on studying the development of Plasmodium falciparum parasites within the hematopoietic niche, particularly in the bone marrow and spleen. She aims to identify the major reservoirs of asexual blood-stage parasite replication and its development into transmission-competent gametocyte stages, which could transform the understanding of parasite biology.
