Biography

Barbara Tversky studied cognitive psychology at the University of Michigan and has held faculty positions at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Stanford University from 1978 to 2005, after which she took early retirement. She is currently an Emerita Professor of Psychology at Stanford and previously held a position at Columbia Teachers College. Tversky is a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the Association for Psychological Science and the Cognitive Science Society, and she has received the Kampe de Feriet Prize. Throughout her career, she has actively participated in governance and advisory roles in various psychological societies and has served on editorial boards for academic journals. Her research interests include memory, categorization, language, spatial cognition, event perception, diagrammatic reasoning, sketching, creativity, design, and gesture. Tversky's 2019 book, "Mind Motion: Action Shapes Thought," summarizes her work and insights. She has collaborated extensively across disciplines with linguists, philosophers, neuroscientists, computer scientists, chemists, biologists, architects, designers, and artists.
