Biography

Professor Barbara Wollenberg studies interactions between the immune system and head and neck cancer, focusing on identifying diagnostic prospective biomarkers and understanding how tumor cells manipulate healthy cells and the immune system to facilitate cancer progression. Her research emphasizes the analysis of inflammatory pathways and clinically explores immunotherapeutic drugs through a dedicated study center. Professor Wollenberg studied medicine at the Universities of Saarland and LMU Munich, where she completed her PhD in immunology and later habilitated. She has specialized in ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) medicine, with additional designations in allergy management and special skull base surgeries. In 2002, she became the director of a chair at the University of Lübeck and transitioned to the Technical University of Munich in 2019. She is a member of the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
