Biography

Barbora Hola is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Empirical Legal Studies of International Criminal Justice. She has an interdisciplinary focus on transitional justice and studies atrocities, particularly in the context of international criminal trials, sentencing of international crimes, and the rehabilitation of war criminals. Prof. Hola teaches in the Master’s programme on International Crimes and Criminology at VU Amsterdam and is a Fellow at the Center for International Criminal Justice. She serves as a co-chair for the European Society of Criminology’s Group on Atrocity Crimes and Transitional Justice. In 2018, she became a member of De Jonge Akademie at the Netherlands Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. Furthermore, in 2017, she was awarded the prestigious WISE fellowship from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research to develop her research line on empirical studies of international criminal transitional justice atrocities. In 2021, she received a VIDI grant to study the intergenerational impact of transitional punishment. Prof. Hola has been active in various leadership roles including serving as a Board Member for PILPG and the NIAS Lorentz Center, and continues to contribute to academic collaborations and public discourse in her field.
