Barry Cooper studied music at University College, Oxford, obtaining his MA in 1973 and DPhil in 1974, having studied organ earlier in 1968. He held a temporary lectureship at St Andrews University before moving to Aberdeen University in 1974 and joining the University of Manchester in 1990, where he was appointed Professor of Music in 2003. He is known for his research on Beethoven, having authored and edited ten books, including a scholarly performing edition of Beethoven's 35 Piano Sonatas published in 2007. His work includes significant contributions to the understanding of Beethoven's compositions, with notable projects such as the reconstruction of the original slow movement of Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 18 No. 2, which premiered on BBC Radio 3 in 2011. In 2017, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Tucumán in Argentina. His research interests cover English Baroque music, Baroque keyboard music, and child composers, with a focus on both medieval and 19th-century music. He has also worked extensively on music theory in Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries.
