Biography

Barry Sanders holds degrees from Imperial College London and the University of London, including a Doctor of Science degree in Quantum Information Science. He is the Scientific Director of Quantum City at the University of Calgary, where he aims to build a quantum innovation ecosystem. His theoretical research includes quantum sensing metrology, quantum-resilient communication, quantum computing, and quantum optics. Previously, he held postdoctoral positions at the Australian National University and the University of Queensland, and served as a professor at Macquarie University for 12 years before returning to the University of Calgary in 2003. Barry has numerous affiliations and visiting professorships in countries such as Austria, Canada, China, Germany, India, Israel, South Korea, and the USA. He is also involved in outreach programs focused on teaching and training in underserved regions of Africa and Central Asia. Barry Sanders is the co-lead of the International Research Network 'Canada-France Quantum Alliance' and serves on various expert panels and advisory boards, including those for CERN's Open Quantum Institute. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to physics and research, including the Killam Annual Professor award at the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary International Achievement Award in 2022.
