Biography

Barry Smitherman is an accomplished attorney, consultant, and private investor, currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at Texas Law University, where he teaches Energy Law. He is the Chairman, President, and co-founder of the Texas Geothermal Energy Alliance, an organization dedicated to educating the public and advocating for the Texas geothermal industry. Barry has also served as an independent director for CenterPoint Energy, Inc., and NRG, Inc. As a former Chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission from 2011 to 2014, he successfully ran for a statewide seat in the 2012 elections. Before entering public service, he had a prominent career in investment banking for sixteen years, holding leadership roles in major firms. Barry holds a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law, an M.P.A. from Harvard University, and a B.B.A. summa cum laude from Texas A&M University.
