Biography

Barry L. Stein, MDCM, is the Director of the Center for Colon Rectal Surgery at the McGill University Health Center. He holds the position of Assistant Professor in Surgery and Oncology at McGill University. His specialty interests include endoscopic management of polyps and the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Since beginning his practice in 1992, he has extensively utilized laparoscopic techniques to address various surgical diseases. His research interests encompass multimodal management of rectal cancer, preoperative radiotherapy, and the development of a watchful waiting program. He is also focused on Enhanced Recovery Surgery (ERAS) and the prehabilitation of deconditioned patients. Dr. Stein has served on the General Surgery Residency Training Committee for several years and acted as the Assistant Program Director for General Surgery, earning multiple teaching awards from the McGill Department of Surgery. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal and completed his General Surgery training there, followed by a one-year GI fellowship. He has completed two years of subspecialty training at Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts, and has worked at the Jewish General Hospital for ten years before establishing the Center for Colon Rectal Surgery at MUHC. He is certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, and holds a specialist certificate in Colon Rectal Surgery from the College des Medecins du Quebec. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Surgeons, and sits on the medical advisory board of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.
