Biography

Barry Strom joined the clinical faculty at Cornell Law School in August 1975 and continued as a clinical faculty member until his retirement on December 31, 2011. Over his thirty-six years at the law school, he served as director and co-director of the Cornell Legal Aid Clinic during separate terms. Professor Strom taught various courses, including the Legal Aid Clinic, Governmental Benefits Clinic, Welfare Law, Interviewing, Counseling, Fact Investigation, and more. His students represented hundreds of clients in a wide array of civil cases, with a focus on governmental benefits cases. Under his supervision, students successfully argued significant cases in federal and state courts. Throughout his career from 1976 to 1996, Professor Strom published 33 editions of the Public Benefits New York manual, covering multiple programs in New York. His publications were utilized by legal services programs, legal offices, hospitals, nursing homes, and public libraries across the state. He served as president of the Board of Directors for Legal Assistance of Western New York and held various leadership roles in community legal services organizations.
