Biography

Barry R. Weingast is the Ward C. Krebs Family Professor in the Department of Political Science and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He served as Chair of the Department of Political Science from 1996 to 2001 and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Weingast's research focuses on the political foundations of markets, economic reform, and regulation. He has written extensively on issues in political economy, development, federalism, decentralization, legal institutions, the rule of law, and democracy. Among his notable works is 'Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History,' co-authored with Douglass C. North and John Joseph Wallis, published by Cambridge University Press in 2009, and 'Analytic Narratives' (1998, Princeton). He also edited the 'Oxford Handbook of Political Economy' (2006, Oxford University Press) with Donald Wittman. Weingast has received numerous awards, including the William H. Riker Prize and the Heinz Eulau Prize (with Ken Shepsle).
