Dr. Bart Cammaerts

Biography

Professor Bart Cammaerts is a renowned expert in the field of media communication studies, particularly focusing on alternative media, representations of resistance, and activist communication strategies against anti-fascism. His research emphasizes the relationship between media and communication resistance, examining media strategies utilized by activists and the broader implications for power and public participation. Cammaerts is recognized for his interdisciplinary approach that bridges political science and media communication studies, introducing political democratic theory into this research area. He has contributed significantly to five main topics including the role of media communication policies at national and international levels, alternative media as a space for resistance, the function of media within social movements, social change, and the challenge of neo-fascism within public discourse. Cammaerts employs a variety of research methodologies, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including surveys, interviews, and critical discourse analysis. He teaches postgraduate courses in Media Communications and provides supervision for doctoral researchers at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he has been a faculty member since 2005.
