Biography

Bart De Strooper is a world-renowned Alzheimer's disease researcher known for his significant contributions to understanding the proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein and conducting functional studies of presenilin, which identify gamma-secretase. His work provides insights into the cellular theory of Alzheimer's, elucidating the underlying cell types that contribute to the progressive nature of the disease. Prior to his current position, he was based at K.U. Leuven, where he served as the Director of the Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie, leading a neuroscience department that comprised over 250 researchers. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2020 and has received several prestigious awards, including the Potamkin Prize, the Metlife Foundation Award for Medical Research, the Alois Alzheimer’s Prize, and the esteemed Brain Prize in 2018. Currently, De Strooper serves as the National Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, where he leads a new research group at University College London focused on interrogating the fundamental mechanisms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
