Dr. Bart Koopman

Biography

Professor Bart Koopman graduated in mechanical engineering with a specialization in fluid dynamics and obtained his PhD at the end of 1989 from the University of Twente, Netherlands, focusing on biomechanics of movement. In 1990, he founded the Laboratory of Biomechanical Engineering and began working as a faculty member, tackling topics related to movement coordination. His research publications have spanned diverse areas including biomechatronics, robotics, and implant mechanics, primarily concentrated on applications within medical fields such as rehabilitation, orthopedics, and neurology. As of 2005, he has served as the Chair of the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, contributing to the establishment of one of the largest faculty groups. His research is embedded within the Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine (MIRA) at the University of Twente and is supported by strong collaborations with various technological and clinical partners. Professor Koopman has supervised over 300 higher-degree research students in Biomedical Engineering, demonstrating his commitment to education and research in the field.
