Biography

Barun Mathema is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. His research primarily focuses on infectious disease epidemiology with a particular interest in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and nosocomial pathogens, as well as antibiotic resistance. Dr. Mathema's initial research involved evaluating tuberculosis programs and conducting active surveillance for antibiotic-resistant hospital pathogens as part of the CDC Hospital Infections Program. He has also led the design, analysis, and management of molecular epidemiologic studies in various locations, including New York, China, and South Africa, with an emphasis on understanding transmission patterns of drug-resistant M. tuberculosis strains. With over eight years of experience, his work encompasses macro- and micro-evolutionary studies of M. tuberculosis, utilizing a variety of molecular methods, including whole-genome analysis, to investigate genotype-phenotype relationships within an epidemiologic context. His investigations have dealt with risk factor epidemiology, bacterial evolution, mechanisms of drug resistance, and differential immunity associated with different strains of clinical M. tuberculosis.
