Biography

Bas Blaauboer studied biology at Utrecht University and obtained his PhD in toxicology in 1978. He spent a postdoctoral year at the MRC Toxicology Unit in the UK in 1979 before returning to Utrecht to lead a group in in vitro toxicology, focusing on biochemical and cellular toxicology, within the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. His research in toxicology transitioned to the interfaculty Research Institute Toxicology (RITOX), which merged in 2000 to become part of the Institute of Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS). He retired from his position at Utrecht University in 2014. In 2006, he was named an American Industrial Health Council Visiting Scholar at the CIIT Centers for Health Research in Research Triangle Park, NC, USA, recognizing his notable contributions in using quantitative modeling techniques in in vitro toxicity studies to infer dose-response characteristics of chemicals affecting humans. In 2008, he was appointed the Doerenkamp-Zbinden Chair in Alternatives to Animal Testing and Toxicological Risk Assessment at IRAS. His research emphasizes combining in vitro toxicity data with physiologically based biokinetic (PBBK) modeling tools for risk assessments. He is the author or co-author of 180 publications, including peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and has served as an editor for 'Toxicology In Vitro' and as the director/coordinator of the Dutch Programme Postgraduate Education Toxicology until 2014.
