Dr. Bas Rodenburg

Biography

Bas Rodenburg is a professor at Utrecht University specializing in animal welfare research. His work focuses on developing methodologies to assess the living conditions experienced by animals. He aims to improve welfare assessment methods by examining behavioral indicators that reflect the experiences of animals housed in social groups. Rodenburg's research emphasizes the importance of studying individual animal behavior within these social contexts. His innovative approach includes automatic tracking of animals to better understand their social behavior and to utilize this information for enhancing health and welfare in group-housing settings. Currently, he is advancing the field of Precision Livestock Farming, which leverages monitoring tools to study individual animals in depth. Future endeavors include developing behavioral indicators that can effectively gauge animal welfare and methods that enable researchers to 'ask' animals about their living conditions, like through preference and cognitive bias testing. He collaborates with the Centre for Sustainable Animal Stewardship, engaging in dialogues with Dutch society to promote animal welfare.
