Dr. Bas Van Nimwegen

Biography

Bas van Nimwegen is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, where he is a board-certified European specialist in Companion Animal Surgery. With expertise in minimally invasive surgery, Dr. van Nimwegen focuses on innovative treatment modalities for tumors, including laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, and brachytherapy using radioactive holmium microspheres. His contributions to surgical oncology are internationally recognized, and he has authored several surgical textbooks in the field. He also represents the surgical oncology section of the multidisciplinary Veterinary Oncology Clinic at the Utrecht Animal Cancer Center. His clinical research in surgical oncology includes collaborative projects that aim to integrate novel treatment approaches for both companion animals and humans, highlighting his commitment to fostering advancements that can migrate from veterinary medicine to human care. Currently, he is involved in prominent studies, including the use of image-guided treatments for brain malignancies and the development of new tumor treatment strategies. His ongoing research is characterized by a highly translational approach, significantly contributing to the diagnosis and therapy of cancer in both animals and humans.
