Dr. Başak Çalı

Biography

Başak Çalı is the head research Professor at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and holds the title of Professor of International Law. She previously served as a professor of international law and founding director of the Centre for Fundamental Rights at the Hertie School in Berlin. Chaired by a permanent visiting professorship at the I-Courts Centre of Excellence at the University of Copenhagen, she is also a fellow at the University of Essex Human Rights Centre and the Hertie School. Throughout her career, Çalı has held numerous visiting professorships in cities such as Ankara, Oslo, Paris, and Natolin while serving on the editorial board of various academic journals. Her expertise focuses on international law and human rights, with extensive publications addressing topics such as the authority of international law, the relationship between international law and domestic legislation, and the nuances of European and UN human rights law. She has pioneered the study of bad faith violations of human rights law and has authored significant works including 'Authority of International Law: Obedience, Respect and Rebuttal' and edited volumes on the intersection of law and human rights. Additionally, she has led several high-profile research projects and is a co-founder of the European Implementation Network, advocating for the effective implementation of human rights judgments across Europe.
