Biography

Basem Gohar is an assistant professor in the Department of Population Medicine at the University of Guelph and leads the University of Guelph’s Research in Occupational Health & Wellness (UGROHW) lab. He holds academic appointments in the Psychology Department at the University of Guelph, the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo, and the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety & Health at Laurentian University. A registered clinical psychologist in Ontario, Bas teaches courses on mental health literacy, clinical communication, and ethics for student veterinarians, as well as qualitative health research and knowledge synthesis at the graduate level. His research interests lie in public health with a focus on workplace mental health, exploring predictors of sickness absenteeism and the psychosocial impacts of COVID-19 on occupational groups. His findings have shaped current research interests including staffing shortages, employee retention, organizational commitment, moral injury, and preparedness for practice. Bas utilizes a range of research methods, including meta-analyses and scoping reviews, as well as both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In addition to conducting research, he disseminates knowledge through creative initiatives like #WORKSHORTS, which features short videos on workplace mental health in healthcare.
