Dr. Bassina Farbenblum

Biography

Bassina Farbenblum is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, where she has been a faculty member since 2009. Her expertise lies in human rights law, particularly focusing on the rights of migrant workers in Australia and beyond. She has served as the Co-Executive Director of the Migrant Justice Institute, a global not-for-profit organization allied with UNSW Law, and founded the UNSW Human Rights Clinic, which she directed from 2009 to 2019. Farbenblum has led several research initiatives on the challenges faced by temporary migrants, emphasizing the need for policy reform to improve their rights and access to justice. Her work involves collaboration with civil society, trade unions, and various governmental and international bodies to build theoretical frameworks that address exploitation and inform legal practices in the field of migration to assure justice under both domestic and international law. Before joining UNSW, she practiced as a litigation attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union and worked with leading law firms in New York. Furthermore, she has been involved in numerous impactful projects aimed at addressing the challenges facing international students and migrants in terms of workplace exploitation.
