Biography

Professor Bastian Blombach's research focuses on the development and optimization of microbial production processes for chemicals, fuels, and renewable raw materials. His work utilizes methods in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and systems biology to exploit the potential of novel microbial systems and to establish industrial biotechnology methods. He combines genetic engineering with metabolome analysis to construct tailor-made cell factories. This development leads to a quantitative systemic understanding of the metabolism of microbial platforms, which forms an essential basis for his research. He studied biotechnology at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan and received his doctorate in 2009 from the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Ulm. In 2012, he became a junior research group leader at the Institute of Biochemical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. Since October 2018, he has headed the Professorship in Microbial Biotechnology at the Technical University of Munich, Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability.
