Dr. Bauer Sumpio

Biography

Bauer Sumpio is a Professor of Vascular Surgery at Yale School of Medicine with a focus on the study of hemodynamic forces that influence the biology of the vascular wall. He received his medical degree and Ph.D. in Physiology from Cornell University Medical College. His postgraduate training included a residency in General Surgery at Yale University and a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the University of North Carolina. He has published over 345 peer-reviewed papers and edited or authored four books on vascular surgery biology. His research primarily investigates how mechanical forces affect endothelial and smooth muscle cell behavior, with an emphasis on signal transduction pathways involved in response to those forces. Sumpio is recognized for managing significant research funding from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and has served on editorial boards for various leading journals in his field. His clinical expertise includes treating conditions like diabetic foot complications and peripheral vascular disease, as well as performing minimally invasive procedures like endovascular surgery. He actively engages in educational endeavors for medical trainees and is a member of esteemed professional societies, highlighting his commitment to advancing the field of vascular medicine.
