Biography

Bauer Sumpio received his medical degree and PhD in Physiology in 1981 from Cornell University Medical College, New York. He completed his postgraduate training in General Surgery at Yale University and fellowship training in Vascular Surgery at the University of North Carolina. He is a faculty member at the Yale School of Medicine, Section of Vascular Surgery, and has a notable professional background, including memberships in several prestigious associations such as the American Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, and the European Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Sumpio has been actively involved in research focused on hemodynamics and vascular disease, with over 345 peer-reviewed publications to his name. His research laboratory conducts studies on how mechanical forces influence vascular biology, specifically the behavior of endothelial and smooth muscle cells in response to stress and strain. Dr. Sumpio has developed specialized instruments to study these forces and their effects on cellular responses and gene transcription. His current work aims to elucidate the molecular pathways that respond to mechanical stimuli in vascular cells.
