Bea de Gelder received an MA in Philosophy and an MA in Experimental Psychology, as well as a PhD in Philosophy from Louvain University, Belgium. Her current research focuses on face and body recognition, and the neuroscience of art. She has received seven research grants, including a European Research Council (ERC) scientific grant in 2012 to study cultural differences in emotional body expression. Over the past ten years, her research has resulted in 155 peer-reviewed articles and 22 invited chapters in professional books. In 2010, Scientific American published an invited article that expanded on the broad impact of her work on unconscious vision, and in July 2011, an episode covering her research was broadcast on the Discovery Science channel as part of the science program 'Through the Wormhole.' She has authored and co-authored several professional books, including one currently in preparation for Oxford University Press entitled 'The Emotional Body.' Additionally, she serves on the editorial board of professional journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Emotion Science. Professor de Gelder has been an ad hoc member of advisory panels for various organizations, including the NIH, NSF in Europe, NWO, the Heart Foundation, and the Belgian Science Foundation. She frequently advises on research panels for the European Commission and other major institutions.
