Dr. Beate Ratter

Biography

Beate Ratter is a professor of Integrative Geography at the University of Hamburg. She has a background in geography, ethnology, and political science, having obtained her doctorate and habilitation from the Institute of Geography at the University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on human/nature interactions, coastal resource management, climate change adaptation, and cultural geography, particularly in coastal areas and islands. Ratter has held several academic positions, including guest lectureships at various institutions in Colombia and Austria. As a lead author of significant IPCC reports and a member of various international research boards, she is actively involved in climate change discourse and policy development. Ratter has led projects that bridge academic research with community engagement and education on climate challenges. Her work has been recognized with awards, including the UNESCO Chair for Societal Climate Research, highlighting her commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change and fostering resilience in vulnerable coastal communities. In addition, she has engaged extensively in public outreach through media appearances and public talks, aiming to raise awareness about coastal vulnerability and sustainable practices.
