Biography

Beatrice Alex is a Senior Lecturer and Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on text mining and natural language processing. She graduated from Heriot-Watt University with degrees in Languages, Translation and Interpreting and received postgraduate training in computational linguistics and speech language processing at the University of Edinburgh. Holding a PhD in automatically detecting anglicisms in French and German text, Alex has worked extensively on text mining applications in healthcare, biomedicine, and literature. In 2018, she became a Chancellor's Fellow at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and has headed the Edinburgh Language Technology Group, which researches natural language engineering. Her current projects include leading NLP work for the Advanced Care Research Centre and analyzing brain imaging reports within the Warbler project. She is also involved in text mining within the Scottish Gaelic Algorithmic Research Group and teaches text mining to EFI students. Alex has co-chaired significant conferences in healthcare text analytics and serves as an editor for the Journal Open Humanities Data. In addition, she co-organizes workshops and is part of various research committees related to data science in the humanities.
