Béatrice Gervais-Bergeron is an assistant professor at the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Planning at the University of Montreal since December 2024. Specialist in phytotechnologies and plant ecology, she is particularly interested in phytoremediation, the management of contaminated sites, and ecology in hostile environments. Holding a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences obtained from the University of Montreal in 2024, her research explores plant adaptation to contaminated or metalliferous soils and the development of nature-based solutions. By focusing on a functional traits approach, she aims to maximize ecological services in urban environments such as industrial wastelands and improve species selection during greening efforts. Her expertise, enriched by international and multidisciplinary collaborations, combines fundamental research in plant ecology with practical applications in ecological planning. Currently, her research focuses on the study of plant communities in serpentine soils of southern Quebec, ecosystems naturally rich in metals, to better understand the mechanisms of plant adaptation to soil contamination. This knowledge contributes to the revegetation of similar urban environments, enhancing city resilience. She also studies the ability of plants to mobilize soil contaminants into their root systems, in the context of managing contaminated sites.
