Dr. Beatriz Lorente

Biography

Beatriz Lorente joined the Department of English at the University of Bern in August 2017. She holds a PhD in Language Studies (English) from the National University of Singapore and has earned two Master's degrees, one in Applied Linguistics from Ohio University and another in English (Literary Cultural Studies) from Ateneo de Manila University. Prior to her current position, she was a lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Basel and has taught in the Philippines, the United States, and Singapore. Her teaching includes courses at both the BA and MA/PhD levels, covering subjects such as Writing Skills, English Linguistics, Language Policy, Sociolinguistics, and various aspects of Literature. Lorente has contributed to many publications focusing on language education policies and the intersection of language with migration and labor. Her notable works include analyses of language policies and the societal implications for workers in a globalized context. She is currently involved in research on linguistic resource management within the Swiss healthcare industry, a project that examines the implications of language skills on job performance and personal qualities in hospital environments, based on changing dynamics of patient and worker mobility.
